Russian spy ship 'loitering' off Connecticut coast

The USS Porter, a guided missile destroyer, was conducting normal operations about 50 miles from the coast of Romania when it was "buzzed" by Russian jets, including fighters and a transport vehicle. Or, to be more precise, the giant Russian spy ship that was floating around off the DE coast earlier this week has ears. US territorial waters extend 12 nautical miles from shore.

This is not particularly unusual - Russian ships, like US ships, skulk around the coastlines of countries in global waters all the time. Russian intelligence ships routinely patrol areas outside US naval bases and track USA and allied forces naval exercises.

Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy, a Democrat, has challenged the ship's actions on Twitter.

The Vishnya-class Viktor Leonov is an intelligence collection ship that can carry surface-to-air missiles, but it was not clear whether the ship is armed, a USA defense official said on the condition of anonymity.

When I first saw a headline online on Tuesday suggesting that a Russian spy ship was off the coast of DE, I expected to see it attached to an article published by or or any one of the other dubious sites that have popped up over the past few years, but I went ahead and clicked when I saw it was on what I consider a reputable site. Trump reiterated that he won't discuss his military plans, and cited President Obama's highly disclosed military timetables.

This particular ship was also spotted patrolling the coast of the April 2015, one official told Fox News.

The ship went into service in the Black Sea in 1988 before it was transferred seven years later to the northern fleet, according to Russian media. The ship was hanging out near DE earlier Wednesday, and it has stayed well within worldwide waters the entire time.

Stone could not confirm the ship's exact location, but said by phone Wednesday afternoon that it was still off the East Coast near CT.

US Navy officials appear largely unconcerned, noting that Russian Federation has every right to have a ship in worldwide waters but that "we are keeping our eyes on it".
