Shiv Sena's Vishwanath Mahadeshwar is new Mumbai mayor

Mumbai: Shiv Sena candidate Vishwanath Mahadeshwar has been appointed as Mumbai's Mayor on Wednesday. Sena had already anticipated his victory after BJP announced their decision to back their nomination last week.

With his election, the Shiv Sena's hold over the Mayor's post continues for the fifth consecutive term.

In the corporation hall, the sloganeering war started soon after the election process began.

The Shiv Sena has been ruling the BMC since 1997 though in alliance with BJP which was till recently a much junior partner but which won only two seats less than Sena this time around.

The High Revenue estimate is predicted as 7.71 Million, while the Low Revenue Estimate prediction stands at 4 Million. Zacks Investment Research raised Kite Pharma from a "sell" rating to a "hold" rating in a research note on Thursday.

Mahadeshwar's election as the 76th mayor of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, India's richest civic body, comes as the culmination of a fierce battle between the Sena and BJP for the political reins of the country's financial capital. Shiv Sena Chief Uddhav Thackeray had said that he was even considering ending its ties with the BJP at the State and Center.

While both parties managed to include more corporators into their fold since then, they fell short of the magical figure of 114 seats, which is required to win a clear majority and elect a Mayor.

Fadnavis said BJP will not contest elections for the post of deputy mayor of BMC and for the standing, improvement, education committees as well as for posts of chairpersons in the BEST committee.

Earlier efforts by the opposition to unite with a common agenda of defeating the BJP failed to materialise following Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis' announcement four days ago that he was withdrawing his party from the mayoral race. Also, a three-member coordination committee will be set up which will submit its report in three months on how to bring transparency in the BMC, he said. The Sena member is already facing legal trouble as Congress leader Dharmesh Vyas has filed a petition in court challenging his election.
