Disney's live-action "Beauty and the Beast" movie opened with an estimated $170 million in US ticket sales, setting a new mark for family movies. It topped the previous March opening weekend record of 166 million USA dollars set by "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" past year and also the seventh largest opening weekend ever.
"'Beauty and the Beast' is the latest example of Disney's perfectly executed strategy of going to their animation vaults, dusting off a classic and reinventing it as a modern live-action movie", said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at comScore.
The new Disney film Beauty And The Beast is set to have one of the most successful opening weekends of all time, indicate early reports.
According to studio estimates, it blew past Finding Dory, which was the previous record-holder for G- or PG-rated releases after it debuted with $135 million (£108m) a year ago.
Giants Expected To Sign Ex-Jets QB Geno Smith
Smith, a second-round pick back in 2013, boasts a career 12-18 record in 30 starts with 35 total touchdowns and 36 interceptions. Taking a flier on him is arguably a better decision than overspending in what is a lackluster crop of free-agent quarterbacks.
The film will also hold the title for the most successful opening weekend for a PG film, musical and non-sequel.
Luke Evans says it took him some time to agree to play Gaston in the recently released "Beauty and the Beast".
The actress is actively seeking the role of Ariel in the live-action remake, and in an online plea to studio bosses last month, the "Mean Girls" star suggested Condon should direct her.
The film's PG rating, mid-March release, casting, and mix of both new and classic songs helped lead to the film's big opening, Degarabedian said.
