Twitter suspends 377000 accounts for pro-terrorism content

Seventy-five percent of accounts suspended for promoting terrorism in the second half of 2016 were found by Twitter's own spam fighting tools, the company said.

Twitter said it has suspended more than half a million accounts since the middle of 2015. The software reportedly determines a terrorism related account through how it behaves, rather than what it posts, saying the accounts have "distinctive behavior".

Since August 2015, over 636,000 Twitter accounts were shut down because of links to terrorism. The company's figures show it took a total of 2,304 account information requests from the United States government, which is down slightly from the six month period that preceded it.

This comes as the company claims to step up efforts to tackle "violent extremism" on its microblogging platform.

The social network has strict rules against the promotion of violence on its service.
