Hyundai Kona Will Be Brand's New Subcompact Crossover

While we've little else, a teaser image provided alongside the name reveal shows-off a headlamp design unlike anything now in Hyundai's product range, suggesting the Kona will usher in a fresh Hyundai design language.

When launched, this new babay SUV will pitch in against the likes of Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and the Ford EcoSport.

Just like many of Hyundai's other offerings, including the Santa Fe, Tucson, and the previous Veracruz, the Kona SUV is named after a North American travel destination.

Set to join the brand's range of SUVs, the Kona is named after a district of Hawaii. We received its spy shots earlier which shows that it has a matching design and body like that of the i20 Active.

Both the Mazda CX-3 and Honda HR-V are two of the bestselling subcompact SUV in the world but their position in the market is now being threatened by Hyundai.

Whether the Hyundai Kona makes it to India, is slightly doubtful as the Creta is already doing well in the country.

"The company has yet to finalize when to release the new auto and whether to launch it in the domestic market first and then overseas markets or to release the vehicle at the same time", the insider said. It will be the fourth and smallest crossover in the brand's European lineup, joining the Grand Santa Fe, Santa Fe and Tucson.

In 2013, the compact SUV market in Korea only sold about 12,000 units.
