Venus reaches third round of French Open as Serena watches

Posted June 01, 2017

Serena Williams was back on the Grand Slam scene Wednesday, only she was snacking on a piece of fruit while sitting in a shaded part of the stands at the French Open, watching her older sister win in straight sets instead of playing a match herself.

Serena was at Roland Garros on Wednesday to watch her sister's match after spending last weekend with her fiance Alexis Ohanian in Monaco.

Top ranked New Zealand doubles player Michael Venus wants to put a awful record at Roland Garros behind him when he makes a fifth appearance at the French Open.

Second-seeded Djokovic barely put a foot wrong in a 6-1, 6-4, 6-3 win over Joao Sousa, while Muguruza had to dig deep to avoid becoming the first reigning champion at Roland Garros to lose in the second round since 2014, when she upset Serena Williams.

As for Williams's return, in case you're wondering how sharp she will be next January, remember that she won her 23rd Grand Slam at the 2017 Australian Open, when she was pregnant. "Thankfully, I was able to find something that helped me get back to doing what I loved".

"I never look up to my box that much", Venus said.

"I came here to win the matches", Kvitova said. It's incredible. It's something very special that if you love the sport you can do it. To be clear, she didn't directly say, "My sister is having a girl", but she definitely spoiled if her younger sister will soon be mom to a daughter.

"She knows exactly what it's like out there, and she's had a lot of success here". The site, however, also mentioned that although Venus is one of the all-time best professional tennis players in the USA, she is also 36 years old and well past her prime. I think you just have to be ready, aware and alert.

Petra Kvitova swept to a tearful French Open victory on Sunday in her first match since surviving a horrifying knife attack which nearly ended her career.

"I know we are all trying and everyone is turning over every rock we can fine to get the most out of it and get into the second week".

Williams spoke about Serena's presence as a spectator.

Williams is a pretty capable clay court player, indeed, with nine titles and a 168-56 career record on clay to earn a winning percentage of 75.

Elsewhere world number one Angelique Kerber starts against experienced Russian player Ekaterina Makarova. Williams hit a few rough patches in her opening match against China's Wang Qiang but pushed through in two sets.

Playing against 42nd-ranked Lesia Tsurenko on the remote Court 16, Makarova lost 6-2, 6-2 after making 27 unforced errors and dropping her serve five times. "I was just hanging in there, being aggressive and waiting for my moment".
