Oracle Team USA lead into mark two with Peter Burling rounding right on the transom of the American boat, sailing towards the right hand lay line on the hip of Oracle, eventually tacking away.

Nathan Outteridge outfoxed fellow Australian skipper James Spithill as his Swedish America's Cup team Artemis Racing handed defending champions Oracle Team USA their first loss of the regatta.

Crewmen on SoftBank Team Japan had to leap clear of Ainslie's port hull as it smashed onto their starboard hull.

That penalty effectively put paid to the Brits' chances of a win, proving to be a deficit Land Rover BAR were unable to overturn.

But the French team kept their cool and delivered the speed and stability that was notably absent from their first races, allowing them to build on their advantage.
