President Trump will not try to assert executive privilege over conversations with James Comey, a spokesperson said Monday, clearing the way for the ex-FBI director's testimony before Congress on Thursday.
"President Trump will not assert executive privilege regarding James Comey's testimony", said Sanders, the substitute for White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer.
But she said Trump wanted to allow for a "swift and thorough examination of the facts" related to Comey's ouster and the multiple investigations into his campaign's possible ties to Russian Federation.
Comey is also likely to be asked by lawmakers about Trump's assertion that the former FBI chief told him three times that he was not under investigation as part of the federal probe into his campaign's possible Russian Federation ties.
"In the vetting process there is a lot of scrutiny of social media accounts, Twitter. any hint of something negative about Trump as a candidate can be disqualifying, and a lot of people haven't made it through that filter", said Christine Wormuth, who served as the Pentagon's top policy official from 2014 to 2016, under former President Barack Obama's administration.
Comey's appearance will be carried on live television.
Mueller, also a former Federal Bureau of Investigation director, was named last month as special counsel by the US Justice Department to investigate Russian meddling in the presidential election.
Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway said on ABC's "Good Morning America" on Friday that Trump and his staff would be "watching with the rest of the world" to see what Comey has to say.
She said "the president's power to exert executive privilege is very well-established", but Trump would not exercise it in this case.
The New York Times first reported the memo, which was confirmed to ABC News by a source close to Comey. "You don't do that I think by invoking executive privilege on a conversation you had apparently with nobody else in the room". Separately, a group of supporters rallied near the White House to support the president's decision to withdraw from the Paris climate accord.
Should Comey deliver devastating testimony on any of those questions that suggests Trump obstructed justice, he will significantly worsen the political challenges facing the President.
