Rory McIlroy has hit back at suggestions he is "bored" with golf after making an early exit from the US Open for the second successive year.

McIlroy bit after the outspoken Aussie tweeted that he looked "so bored playing golf".

"Rory is so bored playiing golf.without Tiger the threshold is prolly 4 majors with 100mill in bank", Elkington wrote on Twitter.

Though McIlroy's response to Elkington probably made him feel a bit better. "Jack [Nicklaus] won 18 and never mentioned his total cash", Elkington responded.

McIlroy's attempt to add to his haul of four major championships at Erin Hills ended in the world number two surprisingly failing to make the weekend in Wisconsin.

Moriya, the sister of world No. 1 Ariya Jutanugarn, is alone in fifth at nine-under 133, three shots back of Henderson. Her successor, Thailand's Ariya Jutanugarn , is eight off the pace.

"That's why jack designed 100's of golf courses. and it's knew. mustn't have taught grammar in the 50's".

"The more rounds I can play, I'm hopefully going to get rid of all that stuff and hopefully strip it down to what you saw the last six holes".

"But I'm not going to force it". Then, just two months later, he wrote that openly gay football player Michael Sam was "leading the handbag throw" at the NFL draft combine, resulting in widespread condemnation and a two-week PGA Tour suspension.

For the first time since the world rankings were introduced in 1986, the top three all missed the cut - with Dustin Johnson and Jason Day sharing McIlroy's fate.

The 28-year-old, who has previously won the US Open, US PGA and Open Championship, needs only to win the Masters to become the sixth player to complete a career grand slam.
