A gunman opened fire on the Republican baseball team's practice before Thursday's annual charity baseball game, critically wounding Scalise, R-La., and injuring three other people as horrified legislators and staffers scrambled for cover amid a barrage of bullets.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise looks like he will make an "excellent recovery", doctors say - but that wasn't always the case.

Scalise, 51, sustained injuries to internal organs, broken bones and severe bleeding after being shot in his left hip on Wednesday morning on a baseball field in a Washington suburb.

Scalise received numerous blood transfusions as surgeons worked to fix his torn blood vessels and other wounds, Sava said, adding: "We are encouraged by improvement in his condition over the last 36 hours". Hodgkinson died after being shot by police.

On Friday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said in a statement that it continues to process evidence and "to assess the potential motivations of the single shooter".

They came from all over the country Thursday night to watch congressmen play a game that they have played for more than 100 years - the congressional baseball game pitting Republicans against Democrats for charity at Washington Nationals Stadium. They also signed oversized cards sending well wishes to those who were injured in the shooting, including Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana.

But Scalise still faces multiple surgeries, a prolonged hospital stay and a lengthy recovery, Sava stressed.

The Capitol Police Memorial Fund was added to the list of charities that will receive money raised by the game in honor of two members of Scalise's security detail who were at the Wednesday practice session and returned fire. Hodgkinson had posted comments critical of President Donald Trump on his social-media accounts and engaged in a profane tirade about Trump in a chance conversation with an auto mechanic the day before the attack in Alexandria, where Hodgkinson had been living in his van since about March.

Nonetheless, said Sava, "We fully expect him to be able to walk" and "hopefully run".

Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco, said all members of Congress would be on "Team Scalise". He will remain in the intensive care unit through at least the weekend, they said.

Several Republican and Democratic members of the House of Representatives and Senate on Thursday said a security review was long overdue.

Former New York Yankees manager Joe Torre presented the game ball to Capitol Police special agent David Bailey, who came out on the field on crutches after being injured in Wednesday's shooting, to throw out the first pitch to huge applause.

But Flake said the final score wasn't likely to matter this year. Griner, who is still in the hospital, was shot in the ankle. Politico reported Thursday that a lobbyist for Tyson Foods who was also shot Wednesday, Matt Mika, remains in critical condition and will require additional surgeries, his family said Thursday.
