AAA Northeast said Monday that the price of self-serve, regular gasoline is averaging $2.24 per gallon.

SC continues to register the lowest average in the nation at $1.90, followed by Alabama at $1.96, according to AAA.

Rockford's average price is $2.24 per gallon, which is five cents cheaper than last week's price.

AAA reports the 2017 Independence Day holiday travel period, from June 30 to July 4, will be the most traveled in the USA during that period that has ever been recorded.

The monthlong gas-price free fall is a result of skidding crude oil prices in global markets over the past month, spurred by increased drilling production in the United States. "With July 4 around the corner, the national average gasoline price has fallen over the last week yet again, said Dan McTeague, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy.com". Hawaii at $3.05 and California at $2.94 are the two states with the highest average prices in the nation.

AAA has more than 331,000 members in Kansas.
