Local Red Cross Helping Hurricane Irma Survivors

The SunTrust Foundation has pledged $500,000 to assist with disaster relief and recovery efforts in areas hit by Hurricane Irma.

For this training, volunteers must be over 18-years-old, have registered through the Red Cross website, and passed a criminal background check.

Volunteers also must be willing to work day or night shifts for 12 to 14 hours, be in good health and able to lift at least 25 pounds.

And the disaster in Florida is no different, with 94 volunteers from the Oklahoma and Arkansas - known as the AOK Region - already staged in Florida and helping, said Red Cross Executive Director Mary Ann White for all of Northwest Oklahoma's territory. The session is limited to 40 participants who will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Red Cross was given a mission and stepped up with a response 3x what the state was asking for.

The Greater Phoenix Chapter of the Red Cross is looking for more volunteers, and it's going to hold a boot camp for new recruits.

SunTrust Bank branches also will accept donations at its branches through October 13 for American Red Cross relief efforts.

Because of some very generous donors, these monetary donations will allow the American Red Cross to help people take care of emergency needs.
