'Star Trek: Discovery' debut led to record sign-ups for CBS's streaming service

There are two different shows in Star Trek: Discovery.

CBS went out on a limb when it invested a significant amount of resources into Star Trek: Discovery, which will air exclusively on the network's streaming service CBS All Access following the show's broadcast debut last night. Take a look at the new trailer here...

And really, that's what's missing from Star Trek: Discovery: a distinct perspective. The Klingon have returned in Star Trek: Discovery and, as always, are one of the Federation's most contentious adversaries.

Executive producer Alex Kurtzman said initial discussions among producers focused on bringing "something new to "Trek" that both fans and people who'd never seen the show before could experience". The prequel series takes place about a decade before the mission of the original 1960s "Star Trek". Flitting between props like dilithium crystals, the hull of Discovery, an environmental suit akin to the one Commander Michael Burnham wears in the early stages of "The Vulcan Hello", a phaser, a communicator and more, it leaves no doubt what you're about to watch.

Star Trek: Discovery isn't going to appeal to everyone, but that's the beauty of Star Trek as a whole.

CBS and CBS All Access has just released Star Trek: Discovery, and so far reviews have been calling the new series promising.

This can be forgiven, however, as we're being prepped to see their relationship tested during the stand-off with a Klingon battle fleet that dominates these two episodes. But those were movies, self-contained narratives that began and ended in a single sitting - and as much as the people behind Star Trek: Discovery insist that they've made a 15-hour movie, that's not the case.

Sucked unceremoniously into the vacuum of space by a hull breach, Connors is the latest in a long tradition of Star Trek deaths.

Handsomely produced, fast-paced and thematically empty, Star Trek: Discovery marks the return of the landmark sci-fi franchise to the small screen for the first time since Star Trek: Enterprise ended its run 12 years ago. Newman even mocked Star Trek fans on air when they wrote in to complain about the contempt Nine showed for viewers. It doesn't help matters that the Shenzhou looks way more high-tech than anything on the original series or TNG, and that the Starfleet uniforms on the show barely resemble those of the era that it's supposedly just 10 years behind.
