In the south, Karnataka figured on the list with 42 cases of communal violence while Kerala had 21 instances and Tamil Nadu had five communal incidents during the year 2016.

Uttar Pradesh also saw the highest number of crimes against women with 14.5 percent (49,262 cases) of the total cases.

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report has placed Mumbai first in offences against senior citizens and second, after Delhi, in crimes against women as well as children.

For the last 10 years now, total number of crimes in India hovered between 50 lakh and 70 lakh, and the crime rate ranged from 455 to 580 - crime rate is the number of crimes registered per 100,000 people. The magnitude of this inflation is such that incidents under SLL are 10 times those registered under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) which deals with crimes such as murder, theft, robbery and rape. The state also ranked second in economic offences and cyber crime.

However, when overall crime, including those under SLL, was taken into account, UP shot towards the top of the list. In 2016, crimes against children have seen increase of 13.6%. However, 159 more rape cases were also registered in the rural areas of Delhi, taking the total number of rape cases in the entire national capital territory to 2,155. As many as 1,847 cases of crime against children cases were reported in the State in 2016, including 54 murders.

The numbers of cities followed a similar patter, with Lucknow reporting the highest number of atrocities reported among the 19 metropolitan cities, and Patna and Jaipur following. "Delhi UT reported the highest crime rate (160.4) compared to the national average rate of 55.2", the NCRB report says. The murder cases reported last year also saw a marginal rise when compared to the same of previous year. A total of 1,06,900 ammunition was seized during 2016.

Uttar Pradesh has reported the maximum number of arms seizure (27,189) followed by Madhya Pradesh (8,019) and Rajasthan (5,757 Arms) during 2016.

According to the report for 2016, covering 19 cities with a population above two million, Delhi reported 33 per cent (13,803 cases of 41,761) of crimes against women past year.

Atrocities/crime against Scheduled Castes have increased by 5.5 per cent in 2016 (40,801) over 2015 (38,670), while atrocities/crime against Scheduled Tribes have increased by 4.7 per cent in 2016 (6,568) over 2015 (6,276).
