John Conyers retiring from Congress amid sex harassment claims

"I was startled and sprang to my feet and exclaimed, 'He just ran his hand up my thigh!' Other staffers witnessed the event", Elisa Grubbs said in an affidavit.

"He is not resigning".

Ian Conyers, the grandson of the Michigan Democrat's brother, told The New York Times he plans on announcing that he will not return to the House of Representatives after his term ends in 2018, mentioning his health as the reason for retiring.

Conyers is facing numerous allegations of sexual assault and harassment from former female employees.

The revelations against Conyers came amid a flurry of allegations of sexual misconduct against several of his colleagues in both the House and Senate, including Reps.

However, he said today that despite all this, he is confident in his legacy.

"My legacy can't be compromised or diminished in any way by what we're going through now". Bloom previously represented Hollywood executive Weinstein, who is accused of sexual misconduct by a number of women.

Conyers flew home to his district last week and checked into the hospital for what a family consultant said was stress. "These serial accusers have done this before".

TMC chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was, however, more vocal in her criticism and claimed that a growth of 6.3 per cent was "no growth".

She also said she was sitting next to him at church on another occasion when he ran his hand under her skirt and said other people saw him do it.

Wounded by the mounting accusations, and well aware of the potential implications for Democrats' efforts to win congressional seats in next year's mid-term elections, the party's congressional leadership last week called for Conyers to resign.

Conyers' attorney Arnold Reed tweeted Monday that he and the congressman will appear on the 102.7 FM Mildred Gaddis radio show on Tuesday at 10:15 a.m.to announce the Detroit Democrat's decision on whether he plans to stay in Congress.

"I'm now in Israel on a fact finding mission with African American leaders from the Midwest", Ian Conyers tweeted just minutes after his grand-uncle's radio interview ended.

"I think there should be a complete disclosure and revealing to all the citizens in the country what federal legislatures are doing or not doing - and any cost that may have incurred as a result of that", Conyers said. "If we're going to raise this unholy and unlawful guillotine, calling for the head of John Conyers, then (an effort to remove) the president of the United States" must begin, he said.

"Whatever (the allegations) are, they are not accurate", he said. In the political world, it's never that simple. Last week, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and other Democratic leaders called for his resignation.

The House Ethics Committee last week opened an investigation into Conyers, 88, after he said his office had resolved a harassment case of a former staffer with a payment but no admission of guilt. Conyers has denied all the allegations, and on Tuesday, wrote the accusations off as "politics".
