A smiling portrait of a young black man shines out from its position on the top of the Atherton steps; as it rests on an easel next to a speaker’s podium under a dark gray sky threatening rain at any moment.

One year ago, a dark cloud gathered over Butler University, and that same man in the portrait shone just as bright when he came to the rescue of his community. On Sept. 24, 2004, Butler lost a hero and gained a guardian angel.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 13-7 lead early in the game but the Jacksonville offense proved to be too much for Butler to handle. Wide receiver Eldin Ferguson led the way for the Dolphins, catching three touchdown passes from quarterback Anthony Salgado. Salgado led Jacksonville to a school record 585 yards of total offense, 356 of which came on the ground.

We pretty much all fit the stereotype of “the poor college student” and have used the “I don’t have any money” excuse to not go out. Ramen Noodles and Easy Mac have become the fine luxuries of dorm life.
