The Bulldogs jumped out to a 13-7 lead early in the game but the Jacksonville offense proved to be too much for Butler to handle. Wide receiver Eldin Ferguson led the way for the Dolphins, catching three touchdown passes from quarterback Anthony Salgado. Salgado led Jacksonville to a school record 585 yards of total offense, 356 of which came on the ground. After a disappointing loss to IUPUI last Tuesday, the Butler volleyball team got off to a hot start in Horizon League play, defeating both Cleveland State and Youngstown State 3-2. On Friday, Sept. 23, the Butler men’s soccer team defeated Xavier 3-0, its largest margin of victory of the season, without three of its key players. The Bulldogs now 6-2, dropped Xavier to 1-4-1 on the season in the rain-soaked and muddy game. IUPUI came into Hinkle Fieldhouse Tuesday night and made quick work of the Bulldogs, sweeping Butler with a 30-23, 30-26, 30-14 victory. Devika Bellamy posted 37 assists for the Jaguars in the 83-minute match.

The Butler men’s and women’s cross country teams had two runners place in the top ten at this weekend’s Roy Griak Invitational at the Les Bolstad Golf Course in Minneapolis, Minn. Last year’s NCCA track champion Victoria Mitchell and Scott Overall led their teams to sixth and eleventh place finishes respectively.

Mitchell led the women’s team with a 21:20 finish while teammate Ava Hutchinson finished four seconds later. Junior Jenni Pereira finished 30th overall. Genni Gardener, Kara Henry, Karrie Hawitt and Maggie Mathieson also ran for the Bulldogs. The last Bulldog to cross the finish line placed 119th out of 287 runners.

Scott Overall led the men’s team with his tenth place finish at 24:32. Senior Nick Goodliffe came in second for the team and finished in 19th place. Andy Rayner, Brian Phillips, Steve Murphy and Alex Haines also represented Butler at the meet.

Arizona State won the women’s title while Brigham Young took home the men’s.

This season marks the first time that the Butler cross country teams have made the NCAA preseason polls. The men’s team ranked 15th in the Mondo NCAA-I Men’s Cross Country Poll while the women’s team landed the No. 30 ranking on the FinishLynx NCCA Division I Women’s Cross Country poll.

Last season both teams won the Horizon League championships and advanced to the NCCA National Championships, with the men’s team placing fourth in the country.
