Homecoming is a lot like baseball – one of those timeless American traditions that ushers in a sense of pride and reinforces the bond that only comes from supporting the same team. And, as October rolls in again, we find ourselves faced with the time-honored rituals of football and tailgating of generations past. But for me, it’s a little different than in the past.

The Bulldogs jumped on the Crusaders right out of the gate Saturday afternoon. D’Andre Dowdy electrified the crowd with a 98 yard kick return for a touchdown on the opening kickoff of the game, the longest in school history. Unfortunately, the Butler lead lasted only 23 seconds.

Pianist and singer Ben Folds performed at Clowes Memorial Hall of Butler University on Friday night, October 14. I had seen him perform in the summer of 2003 at Summerfest in Milwaukee, WI. I can’t say I enjoyed him as much as that time two years ago, although I should note that this past weekend he was anything but timid. His performance included songs like “Emaline”, “Bitches Ain’t Shit,” “Gracie,” “Landed” and “Rockin’ the Suburbs,” among others.
