As part of a distinguished lecture series and the 2006-2007 Celebration of Diversity, Butler University invited motivational speaker Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez to speak in Clowes Memorial Hall last Tuesday evening. Her topic was “Exploding Stereotypes: Beyond the Myths,” and tickets were free and open to the public.
Rodriguez, who is a native of Albuquerque, N.M. and was born in America to a Cuban father, discussed some of her first-hand experiences and what it has been like for her living in a society full of ceaseless prejudice.

On the fourth anniversary of the war on Iraq several people had likened this war to the war in Vietnam minus the protestors. A few days after the anniversary I had seen my first sign of a group opposition. It came in the form of a sidewalk chalk outline of a body proclaiming a student-led ant-war protest downtown on Saturday. The campaigner’s were doing a bit of teasing by not telling me where or what time. By the end of the week the sidewalk had peace signs with the chalk outlining the time and place finally. So, sure enough Saturday I was at Monument Circle from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. My first protest inspired mixed emotions.

As the saying goes, all good things must come to and end. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, their record-setting season ended sooner than they would have liked after a 65-57 loss to Florida in the Sweet 16 on Saturday.
