The Cardinals came through in the 11th inning to steal away a 3-2 win over the Butler baseball team on Wednesday.
The Bulldogs (4-12) jumped on the scoreboard early. Sophomore Jason Jamerson led off the second with a single, followed by junior Alex Montagano’s walk, to set up freshman Michael Letzter’s liner up the middle to bring home Jamerson and give the team a 1-0 advantage.
However, the Cardinals tied things up the following inning and took the lead in the fourth on a fielder’s choice.
Butler evened the score at two in the seventh, capitalizing on a throwing error. Letzer was able to score after a hit to the second baseman by senior Joe Pauley was wildly thrown.
The Bulldogs had opportunities to score in extra innings, but came up short each time. Unfortunately, Louisville came through in the 11th on a two-out single to left field to score the game-winning run.
Junior Jeff Sinkiewicz pitched the first five innings for Butler, giving up two runs on five hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Sophomore Tyler Szymczak (0-1) came in in the ninth and picked up the loss. Letzter and senior Ryan Neat each finished 2-for-5 on the day.
Butler is back at home on Friday for a three-game series against conference rival UW-Milwaukee beginning at 3 p.m.
