Another entertaining night filled with familiar songs with a Butler twist took place at the annual Spring Sing. Performances began Saturday night at 8 p.m., April 5 at Clowes Memorial Hall. Music fraternities Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and Sigma Alpha Iota presented the event.
As usual, paired sororities and fraternities, along with the residence halls, apartment village and commuter students performed “mini musicals” on risers to impress the judges. The judges evaluated the skits using a criterion that consisted of 10 categories, including “presentation of songs,” and “originality.” They also looked at the relation to the overall theme, which was “Great Moments in Butler History.”
First place went to Alpha Chi Omega and Sigma Nu, second went to Kappa Alpha Theta and Lambda Chi Alpha and third was Kappa Kappa Gamma and Delta Tau Delta.
Also featured was the talented a capella group “Out of the Dawg House.” The 13 men opened for the event, singing a variety of songs for the audience accompanied by their signature “beat boxing,” (or vocal percussion). Sophomore Keigan Mull, a philosophy major who has been singing with the group for over a year, said he loved performing at Clowes.
“It was nice to sing in a big theater,” Mull said, “I felt like a rock star.”
Mull also performed at the event with his fraternity, Delta Tau Delta, and helped take home the third place trophy with their partner Kappa Kappa Gamma.
“It was really nice to work together with Kappa because I got to know a lot of new people,” he said.
Although Mull said he dreaded the long practices that lead up to the event, he was glad their hard work paid off.
“The crowd was really into the performance -- I think that’s what makes it all worthwhile,” he said.
Monica Lunsford, a junior majoring in media arts and public relations representing Delta Gamma, said she also thought performing was a great experience.
“I loved seeing all of the hard work everyone put in along with the creativity up on the stage,” she said.
Lunsford said a lot of practice and teamwork went into organizing the skit. She said she was nervous to perform a solo in front of students and parents, but she was happy with the way things turned out.
“I took one for the team and sang a solo about Facebook,” she said laughing. “I was just trying to help out.
“I think events like this are great for parent’s weekend -- it gives the families a chance to watch something entertaining and see some of the fun things we work on while we’re away at school.”
The post show act, Kitsch N’Sync, entertained the audience as the judges decided on a winner. The group is made up of Butler faculty in the Jordan College of Fine Arts: Dr. Frank Felice, Dr. Doug Spaniol, Jon Crabiel and Gary Walters. The professors sang a couple Beatles’ songs, but wrapped things up with their rendition of “Play that Funky Music White Boy.”
“Overall I’d say it was a very successful show,” Lunsford said.
